The history of the Women’s Tour de l’Avenir (Tour de l’Avenir Femmes) is a very recent one, as it was only established in the 21st century.

Inauguration

The Tour de l’Avenir Femmes was created to serve the same purpose for young female cyclists as the men’s race has for decades: to be a proving ground for the next generation of talent. The race is part of a broader trend of expanding opportunities and prestige for women’s cycling, following the re-establishment of major events like the Tour de France Femmes.

The inaugural edition of the Tour de l’Avenir Femmes was held in 2023. It was a five-day stage race for female U23 riders, with national teams competing.

Key Features

Like the men’s race, the Tour de l’Avenir Femmes is designed to showcase young talent from across the globe. Key features of the race include:

U23 Riders: It is exclusively for riders under the age of 23.
National Teams: The competition is between national selections, not professional trade teams, which makes it a unique platform for riders to represent their country.
Challenging Routes: The race typically features a variety of terrains, including time trials, flat stages, and, most notably, demanding mountain stages that test the climbers in the peloton.

Winners

2023: The first-ever winner of the Tour de l’Avenir Femmes was Shirin van Anrooij of the Netherlands. She won the general classification with a decisive performance on the final, mountainous stage.
2024: The second edition of the race was won by Marion Bunel of France.
