Men’s Tour de l’Avenir
The Tour de l’Avenir (French for „Tour of the Future“) is a prestigious stage race for young male cyclists. It was created in 1961 by Jacques Marchand, the editor of the French newspaper L’Équipe, with the goal of attracting amateur teams, particularly from the Soviet Union and other communist nations that were not allowed to compete in the professional Tour de France.
Throughout its history, the race has undergone several changes in name and format:
- 1961-1980: It was restricted to amateur riders.
- 1981-1992: It opened up to professionals.
- 1986-1990: It was known as the „Tour de la Communauté européenne“ (Tour of the European Community).
- Since 2007: The race has been dedicated to young riders aged 18 to 22 (or U23), and it is a key event in the UCI Nations‘ Cup, with national teams competing rather than trade teams.
The Tour de l’Avenir has a reputation as a proving ground for future champions. Many winners have gone on to achieve major success in the professional ranks, including several who have won the Tour de France. Some notable names who have won both races are Felice Gimondi, Joop Zoetemelk, Greg LeMond, Miguel Indurain, Laurent Fignon, Egan Bernal, and Tadej Pogačar.
The first winner of the men’s Tour de l’Avenir was Guido De Rosso of Italy in 1961.
Women’s Tour de l’Avenir
The Tour de l’Avenir Femmes is a much more recent addition to the cycling calendar. The inaugural edition of the women’s race was held in 2023.
The race was created as a five-day stage race for U23 female riders, following the same format as the men’s event, where national teams compete. The first-ever winner of the Tour de l’Avenir Femmes was Shirin van Anrooij of the Netherlands.
