The Grote Prijs Yvonne Reynders is a relatively new but growing event in the world of women’s professional cycling. Named in honor of the legendary Belgian cyclist Yvonne Reynders, the race aims to celebrate her legacy and promote women’s cycling.
Here is a brief history of the race:
- First edition (2022): The inaugural race was unfortunately cut short after only two laps due to heavy rain and flooding, and no winner was declared.
- Second edition (2023): This was the first completed edition of the race. The victory went to Eline van Rooijen of the AG Insurance–NXTG U23 Team. The race was part of the Ladies Cycling Cup.
- Third edition (2024): The race was upgraded to a UCI 1.1 category event, signifying its increasing importance. Scarlett Souren of VolkerWessels Women Cyclingteam won the race in a sprint finish.
The race is held in the Herentals area of Belgium, specifically starting and finishing in Noorderwijk. It is organized by the Café Welkom Veloclub and is held annually on August 15th. The event has gained a reputation for its flat course, which features a recurring challenge of cobblestones on the Hoge Weg.
By naming the race after Yvonne Reynders, the organizers pay tribute to a cyclist who was a dominant force in her era, winning multiple world championships and achieving great success in a time when women’s cycling received little recognition. The race’s mission is to help elevate women’s cycling and create more opportunities for future generations of riders, or „future Yvonne Reynders.“
