The Giro d’Italia Women, currently organized by RCS Sport (the organizers of the men’s Giro d’Italia), is an annual women’s cycle stage race around Italy and is considered the most prestigious stage race in women’s road cycling.
Here’s a look at its history:
Early Years and Evolution of Names:
- First Edition: The race was first held in 1988, won by Italian rider Maria Canins. It has been held consistently every year since, with the exception of 1991 and 1992, making it the longest-running women’s Grand Tour.
- Name Changes: The race has undergone several name changes throughout its history:
- Giro d’Italia Femminile (1988-2012)
- Giro Rosa (2013-2020)
- Giro d’Italia Donne (2021)
- Giro d’Italia Women (2022-present)
Key Milestones and Challenges:
- Grand Tour Status: While often referred to as a „Grand Tour“ in women’s cycling, it doesn’t officially meet the UCI definition of such an event.
- World Tour Status: In 2021, the race temporarily lost its UCI Women’s World Tour status due to a lack of live television coverage during the 2020 edition. This decision was met with criticism.
- Return to World Tour: The race regained its World Tour status in 2022, following promises of live television coverage on Eurosport and Rai Sport.
- RCS Sport Organization: From 2024, RCS Sport, the organizers of the men’s Giro d’Italia, took over the organization of the women’s race on a four-year contract, signaling a new era for the event and a push for greater prominence.
- Cima Alfonsina Strada: From 2024, the highest climb of the race awards the „Cima Alfonsina Strada“ prize, named after Alfonsina Strada, the only woman to have competed in the men’s Giro d’Italia (in 1924).
Most Successful Riders:
- Fabiana Luperini (Italy): Holds the record for the most overall victories with 5 wins (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2008). She also holds the record for the most days spent in the Maglia Rosa (pink jersey), with 40 days.
- Annemiek van Vleuten (Netherlands): One of the most dominant modern riders, with 4 wins (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023).
- Anna van der Breggen (Netherlands): Also has 4 wins (2015, 2017, 2020, 2021).
- Marianne Vos (Netherlands): Has 3 overall wins and holds the record for the most stage wins with 32.
- Nicole Brändli (Switzerland): Won the race 3 times.
The Giro d’Italia Women continues to be a highlight of the women’s cycling calendar, attracting top talent and showcasing the challenging and beautiful Italian terrain.
