The Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa, often referred to as the Clásica de San Sebastián, is a prestigious one-day professional road cycling race held annually in the Basque Country of Spain. It’s considered the most important one-day race in Spain, just behind cycling’s „Monuments.“
Origins and Early Years
The race was first held in 1981, with local Basque rider Marino Lejarreta claiming the inaugural victory. For its first few editions, the race was known simply as the „Clásica San Sebastián“ and was categorized as a 1.2 event. From 1989 to 2004, it was part of the UCI Road World Cup, solidifying its status as a major international classic.
Route and Characteristics
The Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa is renowned for its challenging and undulating terrain, making it a favorite among climbers and aggressive riders. The course typically features a series of punchy climbs, with the Alto de Jaizkibel often playing a decisive role. This iconic climb, along with the Alto de Arkale, is frequently ascended twice in the race, whittling down the peloton and setting the stage for a dramatic finish. In recent years, other demanding ascents like Murgil and Pilotegi have also been incorporated, ensuring a gruelling test for the riders. The race usually culminates in a reduced group sprint or a solo victory in the city of San Sebastián.
Evolution and UCI WorldTour Status
Since 2011, the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa has been a part of the UCI WorldTour, the highest level of professional road cycling, further cementing its position as a key event on the international calendar.
Women’s Race
In 2019, a women’s edition of the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa was introduced, following a similar route to the men’s race. While it was held again in 2021, it was replaced by the multi-day Itzulia Women stage race from 2022 onwards, indicating a shift towards a more comprehensive women’s cycling event in the region.
Notable Winners and Records
Over its history, the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa has seen many great riders etch their names into its winners‘ list. Marino Lejarreta and, more recently, Remco Evenepoel, hold the record for the most victories, with three wins each. Other prominent winners include two-time victors like Alejandro Valverde, Luis León Sánchez, Laurent Jalabert, and Francesco Casagrande. The race consistently attracts a strong field of top-tier talent, leading to exciting and unpredictable finishes.
The Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa continues to be a highlight of the cycling season, offering a thrilling spectacle for fans and a significant challenge for the world’s best riders.
