The Bretagne Classic – Ouest-France (LES 4 JOURS CIC DE PLOUAY 2025) is a prestigious one-day cycling race with a long and storied history, all centered around the small French village of Plouay in the heartland of Brittany.
Origins and Naming
The race was first held in 1931, originally named the Grand-Prix de Plouay. It was created by a former Tour de France doctor, Dr. Berty, who used his connections to attract top French cyclists to the inaugural event. The race name has evolved over the years:
- Grand-Prix de Plouay (1931-1988)
- GP Ouest-France (1989-2015)
- Bretagne Classic – Ouest-France (since 2016)
The name „Ouest-France“ comes from a partnership with France’s largest-selling newspaper, a collaboration that began in 1984.
The Course and the Festival
The race is famous for its demanding circuit, which starts and finishes in Plouay. The course is known for its hilly terrain and technical descents, with a total elevation gain of over 4,000 meters. The constant undulations and a final climb on the Côte de Ty-Marrec make it a race for „puncheurs“ (riders who excel on short, steep climbs) rather than pure sprinters.
The men’s race is the centerpiece of a larger, four-day cycling festival that takes place in Plouay at the end of summer. This festival has grown over the years to include:
- Women’s race: A women’s event, now known as the Classic Lorient Agglomération, was added in 2002. It is part of the UCI Women’s World Tour and uses a similar circuit to the men’s race.
- Other events: The festival also features supporting events like BMX races, para-cycling, track racing, and mass-participation rides for amateurs.

Plouay’s Legacy as a Cycling Town
Plouay’s history as a cycling hub is remarkable given its small size. The town’s passionate volunteer committee has been the driving force behind the organization of the race for decades. A major milestone for Plouay was hosting the UCI Road World Championships in 2000, a significant achievement for such a small community. The success of the World Championships further cemented Plouay’s reputation in the international cycling world.
The Bretagne Classic is a unique event in that it is almost entirely organized by volunteers from the local events committee. This community-driven spirit and deep love for cycling is a key part of the race’s identity and its enduring success.
